A French-English translation workshop based on extracts from literary texts (fairy tale, novel, science-fantasy) which raise the question of translating the gender of the characters.

Since English is not grammatically gendered like French, how can we avoid a generic "neutral" masculine in translation?

What forms, more or less creative, can French allow itself?

Stéphanie Lux lives in Berlin. A literary translator from German and English, she also worked as a part-time bookseller for about ten years. She has translated works by, among others, Clemens J. Setz (winner of the 2021 Georg Büchner Prize), Marianne Fritz (The Weight of Things), Tamsyn Muir (The Sealed Tomb series), Lina Ehrentraut (MELEK + ME), Stephanie Haerdle (Fountains: A History of Female Ejaculation from Ancient China to the Present Day), Paula Fürstenberg (The Family of the Winged Tiger), Annette Hess (The German House), Julia von Lucadou (Jumping from Skyscrapers), and Jens Harder (ALPHA, BETA I+ II, Gilgamesh). From 2018 to 2020, she was the tutor for the German-French translation workshop of the Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt program for young literary translators. She is the winner of the 2020 Nerval-Goethe Prize for her translation of Katie, by Christine Wunnicke (Chambon editions).
