• The Danish Girl tells the story of Lili Elbe / Einar Wegener, a Danish artist known for being the first person to undergo sex reassignment surgery.

• In addition to the biographical aspect, Tom Hooper was also inspired by David Ebershoff's book, a fictionalized account of Lili Elbe's life, from which he chose to take some elements while following the true story.

• To prepare for his role, Eddie Redmayne did extensive research on transgender people and the real Lili Elbe. The actor worked on deepening his voice and took lessons with a London-based coach experienced in working with transgender individuals. To complete his transformation, Eddie Redmayne didn't hesitate to lose 15 pounds.

• On set, to better embody a woman, Eddie Redmayne watched his wife, Hannah Bagshawe, apply lipstick and Jan Sewell do the makeup for other actors. He also had the idea to mimic the way Jan Sewell, head hair and makeup artist, sat and use it in the film.

• The Danish Girl is not the first film to address transgender issues in cinema. Notable examples include Laurence Anyways directed by Xavier Dolan, Transamerica by Duncan Tucker starring Felicity Huffman, The New Girlfriend by François Ozon starring Romain Duris, and My Life in Pink by Alain Berliner.
