"THE NIGHT CROWD IS POLITE, UNLIKE THE DAY CROWD"

Guillaume Dustan — author
Having passed the entrance exam for the École Nationale d'Administration (ENA), Guillaume Dustan, whose real name is William Baranès, worked as an administrative judge. In January 1990, he learned he was HIV-positive. At the time, there were no treatments, and the news felt like a death sentence. He decided to give it all up to become a writer. He chose the name Dustan, after an English archbishop, to ensure he would be placed alongside Marguerite Duras in libraries. His first three books were published by POL. This trilogy, initially kept under wraps, was described by its author as autopornography. *Dans ma chambre* (In My Room) was published in 1996, describing unprotected homosexual encounters at a time when AIDS was rampant. *Je sors ce soir* (I'm Going Out Tonight) is his second book, published in 1997. Finally, *Plus fort que moi* (Stronger Than Me), the following year, explores sadomasochistic relationships. Nicolas Pages, published in 1999, won the Prix de Flore. Subsequently, he published almost a novel a year until 2005. He also worked as an editor and launched the first French LGBT collection, “Le Rayon gay,” at Baland. In his writing, Dustan was the first to assert the uniqueness of gay culture, at the crossroads of hedonism and politics. Once attacked and reduced to the barebacking controversy, Dustan's work has now emerged as a major milestone in 1990s Pop literature and counterculture. His literary influences include Marguerite Duras, Bret Easton Ellis, Andy Warhol, and Hervé Guibert. His works are published by POL.
