NOA ESHKOL / Danse et compositions
Exposure
Dance and Compositions is the first retrospective dedicated to Noa Eshkol (1924-2007) in France. It traces the diversity of her production – choreographic compositions, research on movement notation and textile works – and presents video installations by Yael Bartana and Sharon Lockhart , two contemporary artists inspired by the choreographer.
A pioneer of dance in Israel, but also a prolific textile artist, she is credited with the design, in the 1950s, of a revolutionary system of movement notation, with a dual objective of creation and transmission.
In 1954, she founded the Chamber Dance Group to perform dance compositions without music, to the sole sound of the metronome, to focus on the essentials: the body, space and time.
In 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, she declared that "it is no longer time to dance." A new chapter in her work then opened, with the creation of Wall Carpets, large textile compositions oscillating between still life, landscape and abstraction, which would make her one of the most important textile artists of the 20th century.
